Family heirlooms, oh how they can touch you in a deep and personal way. Anyone who has ever seen photographs of their great-grandmother's wedding gown or an old newspaper article or a grandfather's war photographs knows how moving these pieces of history can be.
My favorite and most cherished heirloom is the Christening Gown that was first worn by me many, many years ago.
Our tradition started when I found my Christening gown packed away years ago, to my amazement, it's was in perfect condition 25 years later. Thanks to my dear mother for taking such great care in packing it away.

Our youngest daughter Jennifer wore my Christening gown for her Christening back in 1978. She wore the same gown, bonnet and shoes that I wore and just looked like an angel. Her godmother is Karen, at Ladybug Creek, it was a double christening, I was Karen's son's godmother too. What a perfect and blessed day.
So 30 years later, the gown was worn by Jennifer's first daughter, then two years ago, it was worn by Jennifer's youngest daughter. The Christening gown has now been worn by four of us, what a blessing!

My daughter and my granddaughters' Christening days are remembered with great sentiment. They truly looked like precious little angels. The gown is just so beautiful, it's of the finest quality of silk, lace, embroidery, ribbon and other sweet embellishments and it truly just so baby soft.
I feel so blessed, it will be cherished for generations to come and it will continue to be passed down. I hope that this heirloom will tie generations of our family together in a deep and intimate way.

I am in search of my christening photograph and my daughter's photograph, it's in one of many boxes in the attic. For now, with a simple click, I can pull up my granddaughters' photographs in the gown. (Aren't computers great?)

ReplyDeleteHi Nancy, I love this post and so relate to it. I have my Christening gown that my siblings wore, I wore and my daughters wore..it is hanging up in our laundry room on the wall(didn't have another place to display it) and I love the generational heritage. What a beautiful gown but more so the baby!

You can certainly tell those two are related! What a beautiful gown and tradition you've begun. I'm sure it is only the beginning of many memories with those gorgeous little ones. ReplyDeleteYou are so right about these special heirlooms. I just posted a picture on my other blog that I share with my sisters of my beautiful Miss M and she is wearing a gold bracelet that belonged to my hubby's mother-she kept it for her son's child. I had forgotten about it until today!!!! I have packed it away to give to my son's child! How coincidental to read your beautiful post on heirlooms!
ReplyDeleteBest wishes,
Natasha.
