Ahhh...I've another Tea Cup!
While tea cups had been used in China since 220 AD or so, the tea cup as it is known today was not in common use in Europe until the early 1600s. Tea was sipped from small bowls. Since the ruling classes in Europe most often used silver or pewter, it was quickly obvious that a different vessel for drinking hot beverages must be developed or scorched fingers would hound the royal house.
Within a few years porcelain was being manufactured in Europe and cups with delicate handles were being created. The tea cup was born.

Even though I wouldn't want to live back then, Downton Abby appeals to me because of so many things. One being the tea service..teacups..rose covered rugs. Delicate little tea cups like yours. It's been a long time since I have found a tea cup and saucer so pretty as your own. I should use mine but I never do. Do you use yours?
ReplyDeleteHi Nancy! Your teacup is beautiful! I love the violets on it--perfect as it is February's flower. I also enjoyed reading the history of teacups --very interesting! Thanks for your visit and comment in my blog!
ReplyDeleteMmmmmmmmmmmm, gorgeous!! Of course, for me, anything purple is perfect. This is a beauty!!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a pretty and unusual pattern.
ReplyDeleteI love to take out my tea cup collection for showers and bridge luncheons. Most of the cups and saucers were inherited, but many were shower gifts when I was getting married - that was what one received way back then!
Lovely tea cups Nancy.
ReplyDeleteNothing like tea taken in a china cup.
Maybe you read my post about Tea! I enjoyed writing up about it.
Thank you for your comment over at my blog.
Love your header.

ReplyDeleteThe teacup and saucer are beautiful. It made me think that February's birth stone is amethyst...much the same color! So pretty! :)

XO,
Jane
