I have always been fascinated with cookbooks, the older, the better.
Believe me, It's not because all I ever want to do is cook!
It's a bit of love for food, love for books and love for history.
I'd like to share one of my favorite cookbooks with you~

It's the amazing...
The Congressional Club Cookbook
The Congressional Club Cookbook
12th Edition
It's a collection of National and International Recipes from those women who have
graced our country as
First Lady of the Land.
graced our country as
First Lady of the Land.
This cookbook was donated by a Texas State Representative's wife and was auctioned off at a charity event back in April- 2003. I was the lucky one that took it home that night.
It's a regal cookbook!
There are so many wonderful recipes from the entire Congressional Club in this fabulous cookbook.
By the way, the Congressional Club introduced their first cookbook in 1927!
I just read that you can purchase the newest edition, the 14th Edition from the Club.

Beautiful cookbook! I love cookbooks too... not necessarily that I LOVE to cook:) I have a large collection of them and many times just sit and flip thru them! I LOVE Church cookbooks, they remind me of my Mama! Have a sweet day dear Nancy! HUGS!
ReplyDeleteHow interesting! I love cookbooks too and have never seen one of these! How neat! ♥
ReplyDeleteI love cookbooks like this!!! Although Chess Cakes was the only one of the four that sounded even remotely good!! A fresh skinned EEL? I am glad we do not have to eat as our ancesters did! I enjoy READING cookbooks more than I enjoy USING them!!
ReplyDeleteYou have a real winner of one!
Hi Nancy! Do you remember how I love to collect cook books, too...but I hardly cook?! And you won a cook book from my blog a year or so ago! I love the old one you have pictured here. I think I might have posted photos of an oldie but goodie I bought on e-bay about that time, too. Fun Post! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI do believe that I am going to check into purchasing the cookbook. Like you, it is more about the history.

I buy cookbooks, from thrift stores, and read them, but seldom cook from a recipe. Baking is the exception of course. I imagine this one is an interesting read.
ReplyDeleteHI Nancy! Oh, what a wonderful cookbook I'm sure! I love cookbooks and this is a goodie!
ReplyDeleteThanks for popping in to see me.
be a sweetie,

ReplyDeleteHi Nancy, I loved reading this post. I am a cookbook lover, too, and read them like novels! I would love to try some of the First Lady recipes. Thanks for stopping by, and I am your newest follower, too. xo
ReplyDeleteWow, those are some really old recipes. I bet they are good. Thanks for sharing at Wow.
ReplyDeleteI looked at your post last night, enjoying the recipes and forgot to leave a comment. duh! It was interesting that Martha Washington's 'chess cakes' is what I call 'chess pie'..without the addition of white wine. That's a new one to me, and sounds interesting. Gotta try it. Thanks for sharing your historic cookbook and the link.

Hi Nancy,
ReplyDeleteThanks for finding me and my blog, so now I have the pleasure of coming here. This is so exciting because I am a history buff of sorts too. This cookbook is fantastic, and I'm looking forward to cooking those Madison Cakes. Sounds delightful! Guess what, we are almost neighbors...New Braunfels has been my homestead for the last 6 years. Practically right down the road...;) Well, at least just a few hours away! :) In Texas that is close.

What a great cookbook. Loved reading the recipes. The suet and spring chicken is something you won't find in todays books. Thanks for stopping by my blog.
ReplyDeleteThat's awesome! My MIL gave me a big bag of old cookbooks...she thought she was getting rid of her junk, didn't even know she was giving me something I wanted! heehee. ;)
ReplyDeleteYes Nancy, I'm like you, I love old cook books for the history and because I plain like them! I love the one you are showing right now, it reminds me of one my best friend Steph has and I had it copied, with First Ladies recipes and pics from the early presidents and history of the recipes themselves. I will post hers because the pics are in color, but the recipes are fabulous! I inherited from my mil so many books, specially one with a leather cover from 1950! I know what you mean, it's not that I cook like crazy or bake, but I love the books and the special cooking. Thank you for coming by and leaving me such lovely comment. Thank you for following, I am also your new follower as I love your blog too. FABBY
